Thanks. I've been curious to see a timeline-based ranking of this sort. The source is important, I think.

Yeah there aren´t many rankings out there from back then. Right now I think the Consensus rankings are most accurate.

Frankly, rankings now are a joke.
Ever since Fedor lost and Lesnar was somehow elevated to #1, I haven't seen a decent top 10 list, period.
Cain is a hell of a fighter, but he isn't the #1 heavyweight. Frankly, Werdum should be #1 imo. I rate Fedor behind him at #2; even though I think Fedor is better, he needs to prove it. For all we know, Werdum could beat him again. I don't mind Cain at #3. I don't consider Lesnar top 5, but I understand he's there as much for politics as anything.

I agree the rankings are overrating the UFC fighters. Fedor and Werdum should be #1 and 2 IMO.

Re: HW Rankings 2001-2009
Yep. Werdum is the first guy to beat a 7 year standing #1 Heavyweight, and goes to 3 on most lists, but Edgar jumps someone like Alvarez to go from #8 to #1 for out pointing BJ. Serra goes from 10 or whatever to #1 for beating GSP. Every UFC fighting in the post TUF era has jumped to #1 after beating the #1 guy, but no if you finish him in 69 seconds, being the first one ever.

Re: HW Rankings 2001-2009
The UFC HW division is built on Big Nog. This is how the fighters got their ranking:
Unranked Mir beat #2 Nog to become #3 HW in the world.
Lesnar beat #3 Mir and became #2.
Carwin beat Mir and became #4.
Cain beat Nog to become #3.
Lesnar beat Carwin to become #1.
Cain beat Lesnar to become #1.

Yeah, it's a complete joke. And once those guys get tot he top it's like they can never drop. Lesnar has gotten the crap kicked out of him twice in a row and didn't even fight for a year before that, and sherdog STILL has him at #2?! Frankly, most of the ufc guys belong at the end of the top 10 list, they are about like Bigfoot in terms of doing big things.....except they don't have as many fights.

Re: HW Rankings 2001-2009
There was a good Sherdog thread before that had a list of all the rankings they had ever released, but unfortunately it got deleted. One of the people here at TT made it.
no clue why it got deleted

And like you said before Barnett deserves to be Top 10. He was #2 in 2009 and is undefeated since 2006.

serra moved to number 1 after beating GSP and that should of happened to werdum, but it was a chance for the zuffa sites to claim the top spot finally which is why its bullshit

Yeah they were involved but what gave the UFC #1 and #2 was Nogs #2 ranking.

Re: HW Rankings 2001-2009
Fedor has always been fighting top 10 opponents. there's been a shift in power in the HW rankings since the fall of Pride in 2007 to the UFC and has continued to do so. This has left the choice of opponents for Fedor somewhat limited but he's continued to fight top 10 guys from outside the UFC. A successful run in the SF heavyweight tourney ought to give him 2 fringe or actual top 5 opponents.
