Wow at BAMMA 4 main event

Post by mrjamescortez on Sun Sep 26, 2010 10:24 pm

For anyone who missed it, this was sure an amazing fight. Both fighters ofc not that technical but was an entertaining stand up fight and Reid really looked hungry. Was really impressed by the fight and can easily say this was better than the Mir v.s. cro cop fight (jesus did i just say that?)

Yeah that was great, I was shocked by how good Reid looked. The whole card is being shown on Friday on Bravo I think, here's an event report by The Mirror:

''Achieving something not seen in UK MMA for some time, BAMMA 4 managed to fill the NIA in Birmingham with a live main event that, whilst owing in no small part to Alex Ried's current media status, had the crowd hugely excited.

Though Alex Reid had to contend with the pressure of the media circus surrounding him, he stepped up and showed that he is indeed a fighter, first and foremost. Whilst on paper many thought Tom Watson would bulldoze Reid, the fight became an absolute war of attrition from the opening bell to the last, a testament to the heart and conditioning of both athletes. Probably shocking no one more than Watson, Reid employed an aggressive, forward motion from the start, catching the defending champion early and making his intentions clear. Watson found himself having to counter as well as defend the shoot as Reid walked him down, easily taking the first round.

Setting the tone for the fight, Reid and Watson engaged in a gruelling battle, played out on the feet and in the clinch. Trading kicks, knees and elbows as well as landing big combinations, both athletes were soon marked up and bleeding and though Reid looked like he was gassing in the third, he continued to stalk the champion and throw big shots. Watson tried to shoot but Reid stuffed the takedown showing that records mean nothing and that ring rust was having no effect. Going into the final and fifth round, both men traded vicious combinations and submission attempts until the bell. The judges gave the nod to Watson (49-46, 49-46, 49-47) but the fight proved to be more than a title defence. Reid displayed the toughness that he was always known for on the domestic scene whilst both earned the respect of the other. It showed to the media and the fans that MMA is a sport - the toughest sport there is - and that the fighters are some of the best conditioned, hardest working athletes competing in any event.

On the main card, John Phillips did something that few have been able to achieve, namely stopping James Zikic. Coming forward and throwing big punches from the opening bell, Phillips had nothing but bad intentions. Zikic tried to find space and counter but Phillips continued his onslaught, catching Zikic and dropping him to the mat after just a minute and a half of the first round.

In the welterweight division, two of the best, undefeated up-and-comers engaged in an intriguing match. Submission prodigy Gunnar Nelson wasted little time in trying to take Eugene Fadiora to the mat and whilst the British fighter struggled against the clinch he soon found himself on his back and trapped in side control. Using his athleticism, Fadiora exploded out but read his intentions and transitioned to his opponent's back. Dropping thudding hammerfists, Nelson got both hooks in and sunk in the rear naked choke for the win.

Simeon Thorensen returned to BAMMA to rack up another win, this time over Marco Santi. Whilst his opponent started aggressively, Thorensen landed a big right hand to set up a takedown. Methodically working on the mat, Thorensen locked in a body triangle before going palm on palm and taking the rear naked choke submission win.

AJ Wenn and Tim Newman fought and great back and forth battle on the feet and the mat. Newman looked to be gaining the upper hand in the first, taking his Tsunami trained opponent down but Wenn stayed composed. Landing a big body kick in the opening seconds of the second, Wenn was taken down again but this time quickly set up the triangle choke to earn the win.

Making his lightweight debut, Scott Jansen took on Stuart Davis in what was expected to be a stand up war. Using his strength, Jansen barrelled his opponent to the mat and began to drop bombs only for Davis to sink in the armbar and finish the fight in the first.

On the rest of the card, Harvey Harra overcame his fatigue to submit David Round in the second whilst Tom Breeze choked out Shahid Hussein and Robert Devanne defeated Colin Lewis with a guillotine choke in the first.''

The NIA was not filled. Large sections were curtained off http://twitpic.com/2rux4p but nevertheless the ticket sales was more than the majority of events in the uk.

The article in the Mirror is obviously not accurate. Do you have a link to it?

Paul Daley was also there as well as Andrei Winner, Katie Price and Dane Bowers.

Bobb the beast sapp is going to be at bamma 5 http://twitpic.com/2rvbfc
