Dan Henderson using Testosterone Replacement Therapy since 2007

40-year-old MMA veteran Dan Henderson is about to face fellow Pride FC legend Fedor Emelianenko later this month, the superfight coming while Hendo is on a two-fight winning streak which saw him capture the Strikeforce light heavyweight title.
But he might not still be competing if it weren't for the same treatment that recently got Nate Marquardt suspended and fired by the UFC.

Henderson recently spoke with ESPN.com and revealed that he's been a patient under TRT since 2007 and was, in fact, the first athlete to receive a an exemption for the treatment in the state of Nevada. The difference between Hendo and Marquardt is that Henderson's testosterone levels have never registered above the allowable limit, whereas Marquardt's have.

"I couldn't even tell you [how to abuse it]. I've never gone above normal ranges," Henderson told ESPN. All I know is that I'm not as tired and I don't get as sick as I used to."

Henderson explained that he sought the treatment after experiencing increased levels of fatigue and a proneness to falling ill, only to find that his testosterone levels were drastically low.

"My levels were so low they were off the charts," Henderson said. "I was always tired and getting sick a lot."

Explaining that he pays for regular monitoring of his testosterone levels to "to cover my own a**," Henderson suggested that other fighters undergoing the treatment should get their levels monitored more consistently in order to avoid situations like Marquardt's.

"The only time people get monitored now is at the fights," Henderson said. "I think it might be good to have stricter monitoring where people are getting tested throughout the year.
